The following is an interview with Stray Asia local expert “Mr Sack” by power blogger Cindy Fan.
Meet the Stray Crew
Meet Mr. Sack, one of the friendly faces and local experts you’ll find at our office in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Mr. Sack – Sales Crew
What does your name mean? In Lao, it is “teak” as in teak wood.
Home, before Straying: Udomxai province
What is your favorite place in Laos?
Luang Prabang and Pakse. Pakse is very amazing for Wat Phou. I have just been to Pakse and it is my favorite now. And Luang Prabang is the most beautiful town. There are quite a lot of travellers but still, it has many things that’s very interesting – waterfalls, caves, adventures, see ethnic groups and hill tribes around the area.
What is your favorite Lao food?
I eat it all! But my favorite is just grilled chicken with sticky rice, with a little bit of chili –
– a little bit of chili, or a lot of chili?!
A little bit of chili! You know, we have many kinds of chili. We love the little ones. The little ones are sooo spicy.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to get outside, like do a picnic with friends at Tad Se waterfalls. It’s located on the river so it’s good for fishing. I love fishing. Normally we grill the fish and eat with pickled vegetables. Then have some laolao whiskey…at the end, we cannot drive back!

Are you good at fishing?
… better than medium.
Do you have brothers and sisters?
I have two brothers and one sister. They are all married.
Are you married?
Do you have a girlfriend?
Do you have two girlfriends?
(laughs) No, just one.
How long have you been dating?
Not long. Just only six months. This is my second girlfriend. I had one before – we almost got married – but we were not right together. Always fighting. But this one, we just started dating.
Where do you take her on your dates?
Discotheque. But not every day. Only on my days off because I’m scared I’m going to have a hangover when I’m at work! It’s not nice.
Why should people explore Laos? What do you hope Stray travellers will take away from their experience?
Stray goes to visit almost everywhere in Laos, and way off-the-beaten track where there are less tourists. We also take them to see the most interesting places in Laos that people want to go, like Kong Lor, a 7 km long cave.
I’m really happy when I meet Stray clients. I hope they tell their friends and return to Laos with them.
